ABOUT THE PICTURES

PJLynch

The pictures in The Story of Britain were drawn by a fantastic artist called PJ Lynch. PJ lives in Dublin and he's done the illustrations for lots of books, winning loads of prizes for them.

This is how it worked. First Caz (the publisher) and Beth (the designer) decided how many pictures they had room for. Then they sat down with me to talk about what we wanted pictures of and what we wanted them to show. PJ read the book and started to do sketches in pencil. Often he did a lot of research into how people looked and the kind of clothes they wore. He sent them through by email for all of us to comment on. When everyone was happy with the sketches he got out his watercolours and produced the finished paintings. You can find out more about PJ and his work HERE.

The maps were done by my daughter, Martha, who's brilliant at drawing and art (she's doing GCSEs in Art and DT at the moment). She spent most of a summer holiday looking at maps and deciding the best way to make them really clear but still fun to look at.
